Alstom secures a second wind turbine contract in South Korea

DaeMyoung Energy Corporation is a subsidiary company of DaeMyoung GEC, a large South Korean engineering and construction services company. Gowon wind farm is located approximately 170 kilometres east of Seoul and Alstom will supply and supervise the installation and commissioning of 6 units of its ECO 110 wind turbine which has a 90 metre tower. Each turbine has an output of 3MW and when operational the wind farm in its entirety will have a capacity of 18MW.

The ECO 110 incorporates Alstom’s pure Torque technology which protects the transmission chain by diverting unwanted stresses from the wind to the turbine’s tower. This in turn optimises its performance. The technology was exclusively developed by Alstom and is deployed throughout the company’s entire range of wind turbines. The nacelle of the ECO 110 consists of three independent elements of large dimensions that facilitate maintenance operations and safety inside the machine. #

“This opportunity is significant as it will represent our continued presence for Wind Power in Korea and also working with our important customer Eurus Energy” said Yves Rannou, Alstom’s Senior Vice President, Wind.

The Gowon wind farm contract is the second to be secured by Alstom in Korea this year. It will be fully operational by the end of 2015 and is part of South Korea’s aim to generate 20 percent of its total electricity demand from renewable energy by 2020. At present, with a population exceeding 50 million and with limited domestic energy resources, South Korea has to import 96 per cent of its energy supply.

The wind farm will be operated by joint owners Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation (Eurus Energy) and DaeMyoung Energy Corporation. Eurus Energy is an Independent Power Producer based in Japan and with over 2000 MW in operating assets. Alstom has previously supplied wind turbines for the company’s Satomi wind farm and Kawazu wind farm. The company has maintained a presence in South Korea for over 45 years, having supplied over 34 percent of hydro plants as well as the first TGV export systems solution

Alstom has been present in South Korea for over 45 years having supplied to over 34% of hydro plants as well as the first TGV export systems solution in the KTX Project and the first High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link between Haenam and Jeju. The company is also currently supplying wind turbines to Gimnyeong wind farm.
