Iberdrola completes its first Kenyan wind farm

The contract for the Ngong II project, worth 21.4 million euros, was awarded to the consortium by the state-owned Kenyan Electricity Generating Company Ltd (KenGen). The new wind farm is located in the municipality of Ngong Hills, around 30 kilometres west of Nairobi and consists of 16 Gamesa G52 wind turbines with finance provided for the project by the Spanish Enterprise Internationalisation Fund (FIEM).

The project was completed two months ahead of schedule on a turnkey basis, in that it included the stages of design, purchase of equipment, construction, assembly of components, connection to the grid and maintenance over a period of at least one year.

Kenya is regarded as a priority market for Iberdrola and the successful completion of Ngong II consolidates the operations of its subsidiary in the country. The project will also provide Nairobi with a reliable and modern electricity system which will include a high voltage network and 15 kilometres of new overhead and underground power lines, in addition to four substations and an extension to the existing Dandora 220 kV substation.

Iberdrola is also engaged in building the Kinangop wind farm, wind farm, which will have a capacity of 61 MW and will consist of a total of 38 turbines, each with a unit capacity of 1.6 MW, manufactured by US firm General Electric.

The company is now active in almost 40 countries around the world with its subsidiary being responsible for turnkey projects for other companies in the group and for third parties.
