The Nest Thermostat can programme itself, automatically turn down heat when building occupants are away and can be controlled from a mobile. It can turn the boiler on and off according to the temperature, learns occupants preferred temperatures and adjusts them according to personal schedules. It knows when the building is empty thanks to built-in sensors and in response can turn down the temperature in order to save energy.
“With the U.K. Office of Gas and Electricity Markets saying that U.K. residents spend on average about £1,342 per year on electricity, and heating making up over 60 percent of U.K energy bills, it’s the perfect time to bring the Nest Learning Thermostat to the U.K.” said Lionel Paillet, Nest’s general manager for Europe. “Nest Learning Thermostat customers in the U.S. experience savings of approximately 20 percent on average off their heating and cooling bill and we’re looking forward to helping customers in the U.K. save as well.”
The UK version has the same features as the version offered in the US but also has some extra features in that it is a built in thermostat and programmer and therefore can replace existing programmers in the home. It also has a feature called Heat Link which turns the boiler on and off when the temperature is changed on the thermostat and also a stand accessory for those who don’t have thermostat cables available in the wall, want to replace wireless thermostats, or just want to put in a better location. It is compatible with almost all central heating systems including air source and ground source heat pumps
Nest has now partnered with UK energy company npower which will offer the product to millions of customers across the country through a three-year fixed tariff energy bundle. It will also be available through retail stores as well as online.
