New government appointments offer hope for Australian wind power

Australia’s wind energy industry has welcomed the appointment of the new Wind Farm Commissioner and Independent Scientific Committee on Wind Turbines, which should return a sensible tone to the debate.
New government appointments offer hope for Australian wind power

Kane Thornton, the Chief Executive of the Australian Clean Energy Council (CEC) said that the appointments should help to increase community understanding about the technology and return a sensible tone to the debate about Australian wind power.

“The industry welcomes the appointment of Andrew Dyer to the position of Wind Farm Commissioner, as well as the members of the Independent Scientific Committee on Wind Turbines” said Mr Thornton. “We will work with them in good faith. We expect that these new appointments will help to blow away some of the conspiracy theories about wind farms that have been championed by a small number of federal senators over the last few years.”

Mr Thornton added that informing local communities about the reality of the technology is essential to ensuring continued strong support for wind energy. All credible health and acoustic bodies in Australia and many government bodies have now issued statements to the effect that there is no credible evidence that wind farms can directly make people sick. These include The Australian Medical Association, The National Health and Medical Research Council, the Association of Australian Acoustical Consultants, the South Australian EPA, the Victorian Department of Health and the New South Wales Department of Health.

Wind energy is now recognised by many countries as being the cheapest type of renewable energy, as well as being one of the safest and cleanest forms of energy available. A majority of Australians support the technology and want more installed renewable energy in the country.
