New revolutionary wind turbine intended to inspire students

The Low Carbon Energy Company has announced the completion of the installation of a revolutionary helical wind turbine at St Catherine’s Academy in Bolton (UK). The 1-kW helical wind turbine has been installed to help educate the students in wind technology along with a small PV system (the systems that use solar panels to convert sunlight into electricity).

The newly installed turbine, manufactured by New York City-headquartered Urban Green Energy (UGE), will generate around 1,500 kWh of electricity per year. Whilst the two renewable energy systems will contribute to reducing electricity, their primary function is to help educate students at St Catherine’s Academy in Bolton.

The UGE turbine is one of the world’s leading brands in helical turbine technology and is distributed in the North of England by the Low Carbon Energy Company – the installation is a UK first.

“It was a challenging installation, but it’s something we’re extremely proud of. The long term benefits of installation shouldn’t just be measured in terms of a cash-saving, or one building producing energy in a cleaner way. Our aspiration is that the technology inspires the young people at St Catherine’s Academy in Bolton,” explains Ged Ennis, Operations Director of The Low Carbon Energy Company.

“It would be a lasting legacy for us to think that we had influenced a generation of environmentally conscious consumers. But the real achievement will be that some of the students recognise the importance of sustainable energy and see it as a challenging and rewarding career,” he continues. “We are keen to promote the sustainability agenda in a number of ways and working alongside the education sector is important to us. Besides wind power we’d also like to explore other avenues where we have experience and expertise too, such as Solar Energy, Heat Pumps and Heat Capture technology.”

Although a relatively new concept to the UK, helical turbines are ideal for urban areas and present as good residential solution, as they can be roof or ground mounted. Last month, UGE installed one of its eddyGT helical wind turbines atop The Town School in Manhattan (New York, US). The turbine, described as New York City’s first wind turbine at a school, was switched on by New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg.
