Siemens to supply direct-drive wind turbines to Schleswig-Holstein

Siemens Energy has secured an 36 MW order for twenty four wind turbines for the Süderlügum wind farm in Nordfriesland, Germany.
Siemens to supply direct-drive wind turbines to Schleswig-Holstein

The order consists of twelve direct-drive wind turbines, eleven model SWT-3.0-113 and one model SWT-3.0-101 wind turbine. The installation of the turbines at the publicly-operated Süderlügum wind farm is scheduled for late 2014 and the contract includes a 20 year service and maintenance agreement to ensure long term economic operation of the facility.

The order is the third Siemens project to be implemented by Reinhard Christiansen, who manages the business together with Horst Leithoff and Peter Steffens. Prior to this, the three partners were involved in erection of the Grenzstrom Vindvedt and Ellhöft publicly-operated wind farms.

“Süderlügum is an important project for the local population that will make a collective contribution to the energy turnaround” said Reinhard Christiansen. “As with our other two wind farms, Süderlügum will also supply clean electricity that is funded entirely by the public.”

The Süderlügun wind farm is located around 20 kilometers from the North Sea coast and will be able to feed in reactive power to the grid, therefore supplying green electricity when the wind is not particularly strong. Siemens “Reactive Power at No wind” technology enables the wind turbines to stabilize the alternating current power grid when no wind is blowing, thereby eliminating the need for phase shifters and counteracting frequency displacement which occurs when industrial customers take large volumes of active power from the grids.

Each turbine will also have half as many parts as conventional, geared units and considerably less moving components. This will provide additional economic benefits for the owner/operator by enhancing efficiency and reducing operating costs.
