Sotavento to produce hydrogen using wind as primary energy

Sunday, 08 October 2006

At the end of this year, an experiment will start in Sotavento's experimental park in Monfero (A Coru帽a). The purpose is to obtain hydrogen from water using wind power as primary energy source. According to La Voz de Galicia, a Spanish newspaper, the test, which will be carried out during 2007, is supported by Galicia's Industry Department and Gas Natural, with 400,000 euros. It is expected to provide valuable information on the storage of wind power through the use of hydrogen, which will be saved in cylinders.

In order to obtain the gas, the energy generated by the wind turbines will be sent to an electrolyzer, and the water molecules will be split inside of it. Oxygen will be released into the atmosphere, while hydrogen will be stored and used to obtain more electricity inside an engine.

According to the newspaper, Mr Jos茅 N煤帽ez, Manager of Sotavento windpark, has explained that the civil works will start by the end of this month with the installation of a big container which will contain the electrolyzer and the engine.

If the test is successful, windparks will be able to absorb energy in intense wind moments and produce kilowatts even when the wind is not blowing. Also it will make possible managing the wind energy production to minimize gaps from the forecast levels when the distribution system imposes restrictions.
