"The energy savings are downright good, without making any investment in buildings"

– What are the benefits of the project at the European level?
The development of the test in five different countries means, firstly, to try EMMOS with different users, habits and even regulations, and secondly to have an ideal test platform looking towards future international deployment, allowing EMMOS to be tested in buildings subject to weather conditions, management methodologies, etc.

– What challenges have arisen during the implementation stage? (with respect to software, consortium management, implementing EMMOS, etc.)
Working with thirteen companies from seven different countries is certainly not always easy. Positive development comes from the good relationship we have, which in turn is motivated by impeccable pre-planning and absolute transparency among the consortium members. With respect to the technical details regarding software implementation in buildings, it really has been a challenge to overcome all the administrative obstacles that commonly occur when any system is connected to a network in public buildings. In this regard, the support provided by building managers has been vital. Their good work managed to overcome seemingly insurmountable barriers. The project is proving successful and this work has been rewarded with results of great energy savings, without making any investment in the buildings at all.

– What gap does EMMOS wants to bridge in the energy efficiency market?
EMMOS seeks to become a leader among decision-making and operational tools for building managers in relation to energy use and control. We believe that a program designed for users such as us, an Energy Service Company (ESCO), may represent an important milestone. The software is based on the needs and experiences that we, as energy managers, have found in the development of our contracts, so we understand that EMMOS fills a major gap in the sector. Undoubtedly there is similar software on the market but none has all the features EMMOS does.

– How well have building managers accepted this software?
Frankly it’s been excellent. Having overcome the initial barriers, and gaining some knowledge in program management, EMMOS has become a powerful tool to help building managers monitor energy consumption, see where and why energy is being consumed based on their own experience, and establish savings strategies that, once implemented, are perfectly verifiable through the same software.

– What role does EMMOS play in defining corrective actions for energy efficiency?
EMMOS is of vital importance as it not only allows crossing data from different sources (BMS, Accounting, consumption, etc.), which were hitherto rarely analyzed together, but it also allows us to simulate improvement actions that help establish the best strategy for energy saving in the building. Once the relevant decisions are taken and the measures implemented, we can analyze their real impact and study the return on investment, if it involves a cost.

– What role does TEDS4BEE play in the Innovation Strategy of Ferrovial?
Ferrovial has emphasized the importance of innovation since its origins and the development of this project is a further demonstration of the company's commitment to intelligent infrastructure. Specifically, TEDS4BEE forms part of the proposal for optimizing energy efficiency and the anticipation of future regulations regarding the reduction of greenhouse gases, thereby reducing energy consumption.
