"Populus" is a genus of fast-growing trees more commonly known as cottonwoods and aspens. The genus is considered an ideal feedstock for bioenergy because it produces a significant amount of biomass in a relatively brief amount of time, and quickly recovers after being cut -- even all the way down to crowd level.
The recipients of the grant are Amy Brunner, associate professor of molecular genetics in the College of Natural Resources and Environment, and Jason Holliday, assistant professor of forest genetics and biotechnology in the college.
Their project is one of 10 grants awarded as part of the national strategy of sustainable biofuels production.
