Siemens notches up another solar farm

In mid-October, Siemens Energy put the Les Mées solar photovoltaic (PV) farm in the department of Alpes-de- Haute-Provence in the south of France on line. According to the company, the plant is the largest in France, with a capacity of 30.9 MWp.
Siemens notches up another solar farm

For this project, Siemens installed a total of six turnkey photovoltaic power plants on behalf of project developer, Eco Delta Développement (EDD), whose subsidiary Delta Solar developed the farm in the district of Les Mées. The solar power plants, for which Siemens will also handle maintenance, will generate a combined peak output of 31 megawatts (MWp), supplying clean electricity to approximately 12,000 French households.

The Les Mées solar farm, which is located at an elevation of 800 metres above sea level on the La Colle des Mées plateau, comprises a total of 112,000 solar modules covering an area of 70 hectares.

Under the terms of turnkey installation of the six photovoltaic power plants Siemens was not only responsible for grid connection and the control systems but also for supply and installation of the inverters, low- and medium-voltage components, and transformers. Furthermore, Siemens was also responsible for the civil works and substructure, and will also perform maintenance on the solar power plants.

"The Les Mées project demonstrates that we're the right partner for successful, on-schedule implementation of complete photovoltaic plants," said Martin Schulz, Vice President of the Photovoltaics Business Unit of the Siemens Solar & Hydro Division. Siemens erected the six PV plants in Les Mées in only ten months.

“The formal commissioning of the Les Mees Solar Farm, the largest photovoltaic power plant in France today is a major event for the future of the French photovoltaic sector. It confirms the need to let their chance to SMEs independent as ours, because they are the source of wealth and dynamism of the sector, in accordance with the principles of environmental, social and societal sustainable development. We thank the town of Les Mees, Sumitomo Corporation and all our partners have made this great achievement, “said Ron Knoche, CEO of Eco Delta.

Components and solutions for photovoltaic power plants are part of Siemens' Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2010, revenue from the portfolio totalled around €28 billion, making Siemens “the world's largest supplier of ecofriendly technologies”. In the same period, its products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by 270 million tonnes an amount equal to the annual emissions of the megacities Hong Kong, London, New York, Tokyo, Delhi and Singapore combined.
