PetroSun moves into final stage of testing for algae-based biofuel

 PetroSun Inc. of Scotscale, Arizona, has pushed field testing of the cultivation of algae for biodiesel production into its final stage. The purpose of this final stage is to produce an algae paste adequate for testing the output and economics of a number of selected biodiesel refinery manufacturers.

The testing is carried out by Algae BioFuels, a wholly owned subsidiary of PetroSun. The company is to own and operate production and refinery facilities in the United States. Sites in Arizona, New Mexico, California, Louisiana and Michigan are being considered for the initial commercial cultivation of algae feedstock, and the company is eyeing Australia and China as potential candidates for production and refinery abroad.

 

PetroSun is a diversified energy company that specializes in discovery and development of both traditional (fossil-based) fuels and renewable energy resources. Its subsidiary Algae BioFuels is an emerging producer of biodiesel derived from the cultivation of algae.

 

Algae-based biodiesel has a number of favorable characteristics. Like most other biofuels it is non-toxic and readily biodegradable and it contains no sulfur. Yet the major upside is that, unlike corn or soybeans which can be used for consumption as well as biofuel production, there is no competing purpose for the cultivated algae.
