The green charger smart initiative has been launched by DEWA to support the Smart Dubai initiative launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The goal of the initiative is to transform Dubai into "the smartest city in the world."
“At DEWA, we work to achieve the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum," said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
"We have launched three smart initiatives to support this, including Shams Dubai to connect solar energy in buildings, smart applications and smart meters, and Green Charger for infrastructure and electric vehicle charging stations," Al Tayer continued. "These initiatives will contribute effectively to the achievement of the UAE Vision 2021 and Dubai Plan 2021, which aims to make Dubai a smart, integrated and connected city, sustainable with its resources and where environmental components are clean, healthy and sustainable."
DEWA launched the first electric vehicle charging station in Dubai at DEWA Headquarters. As part of the first phase, 100 electric vehicle charging stations are being built this year, of which 16 are now ready. In the second phase,
DEWA will install 84 charging stations of three different types, fast-charging, medium-charging and home-charging stations, will be installed across Dubai. Fast-charging points provide 80 percent charge in 20 to 45 minutes depending on the type of car and battery capacity. Most of these will be installed at petrol stations.
Medium-charging points provide a full charge in 2 to 4 hours, depending on the type of car and battery capacity. These will located in malls, parks and offices. Home-charging points fully-charge vehicles in 6 to 8 hours, depending on the type of car and battery capacity. The rate for charging an electric vehicle in public charging points is 29 Fils per kW/h.
If the vehicle is charged at home, the standard residential electricity rate will be applied, Al Tayer said.
Abdullah bin Sulayem was pleased with being the first user of the Green Charger card in Dubai.
“The electric vehicle is an important step in Dubai’s future towards the promotion of sustainable development and achieves the aspirations of our leadership to make Dubai one of the smartest, best and most sophisticated cities in the world," he said. "We, as citizens, must contribute effectively to the achievement of these aspirations and we need to be role models for all segments of society by preserving the environment and promoting sustainability.”
DEWA said that EV owners can visit any of DEWA’s customer service centres, to register and get the green card charger. This will be associated with the customer's account, and electricity consumed for charging the vehicles will be added to the customer’s bill on a monthly basis.
The documents required for registration are the user’s Emirates ID card, driver's license and vehicle registration. The green charger stations do not have cash or credit card payment facility. Only green charger cards can be used, whereby customers receive monthly bills, which they can settle through any of DEWA’s payment channels.
