Enex which is owned by Reykjavík Energy Company and Geysir Green Energy have teamed up together to create a geothermal heating system which will be 10 times as large as the one in Reykjavik. The system will be the world’s largest and will be located in the Chinese city of Xianyang.
Xianyang and Reykjavik are too cities which are very much contrasting. Reykjavik on the one hand has some of the cleanest air in the world and gets most all of its energy from either geothermal or hydro power. The city is home to some 6 million people , and the province of Shaanxi is home to 37 million people, many times the amount of Iceland. The city also has some of the most polluted air in all of China. In China it is hoped that by 2010 some 110 giga watt hours can be produced on a national scale out of a total of 2.7 million giga watt hours. Replacing the heating energy sources with clean geothermal energy will be an interesting case study in the sustainability of such a venture on a large scale.
Lárus Elíasson Enex’s managing director said that “We haven’t examined in detail what our opportunities are.”
Enex’s operations in China are managed by Shaanxi Green Energy, which is in turn owned by Enex China and CGCO, which is owned by Sinopec. Sinopec is one of China’s largets oil companies.
