Turkey and Syria look set to join forces to build hydro dam

The countries of Turkey and Syria are looking to jointly build a hydro dam together on their shared border and will soon decide on the details of the project according to the Turkish Energy Minister Hilmi Guler. The project will be a subject on the agenda for the next meeting of leaders from both of the countries in Damascus.  The project looks to be an ideal 50/50 share with both sides contributing equally. This is not the first time the countries have talked about energy related matters with Syria earlier expressing interest in getting Iranian gas via Turkish pipelines. Previously Turkey has been involved in disputes with Iraq and Syria over proposals for construction of dams on the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers.

The Energy Information Administration has estimated that 40% of Turkish power is already generated using hydroelectric means and there is a great deal of potential. Already over 150 project are operating and it estimated that as much as 122,000 Gwh hours could ultimately be developed in Turkey.

A conference on Advancing Sustainable Hydropower is also scheduled in Antalya Turkey for May of this year. The conference is being organized by Turkish Hydropower Association (TURSEB) in addition to UNESCO amongst others.
