Wells Fargo tops U.S. list of green power purchasers

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency yesterday released its quarterly top 25 of green power purchasers. The list is headed by Wells Fargo & Company with 550 million kilowatt hours annually purchased from clean, renewable sources. Interestingly, this is the first time a private company ranks number one.

The EPA compiles the list every quarter based on organizations’ yearly consumption of electricity generated from renewable energy such as wind, solar, biomass, geothermal and small hydro. The second and third spot in the top 25 are taken by Whole Foods Market (the world’s largest retailer of natural and organic foods) and the U.S. Air Force, respectively, while the EPA itself ranks fourth. Other big corporations included in the list published yesterday are Johnson & Johnson, Starbucks, IBM, DuPont and Cisco Systems. The number of Fortune 500 companies and now Wells Fargo’s pole position in the ranking are yet another example of how good environmental stewardship and profitable business can coincide.

The EPA’s press release states that the “Top 25 green power purchasers are buying more than 4 billion kilowatt-hours of green power on an annual basis. This is equivalent to the energy needed to power more than 350,000 average American homes each year.” The EPA actively encourages American organizations of all sizes to satisfy their needs for electricity with renewable energy.  The aim is two-fold: to reduce the environmental impact of energy consumption and to diversify America's fuel supply.
