The President of Barcelona's Energy Agency, Ms Inma Mayol, , has announced that 17 new solar PV facilities will be created in venues owned by the local government. In total, 2,200 new square meters of solar PV power will be added to Barcelona´s already extensive PV network.
The new modules will boast a capacity of 283.7 kW, with an estimated yearly production of 319,000 kWh. This will prevent more than 34 tonnes of CO2 to be released into the atmosphere.
Ms Mayol said that "it is a priority to provide the city with this type of modern and fully equipped" facilities. The high number of people that visit these buildings each day will make of the facilities a great tool to promote renewable energy. Some of these examples, such as the Pérgola del Buen Pastor (Good Shepherd Canopy), which has becomeBarcelon's second largest PV plant, are already in operation. When all of them are, they will provide enough electricity to power 147 homes throughout the year.
In any case, the team of engineers working on the project will ensure that all of them are cost-efficient due to the excellent locations available. With the new 17 facilities Barcelona will total an impressive 34 solar plants. With the Forum's plant extension, the total solar PV area will surpass 13,000 square meters with just above 1.6 MW of capacity.
