The company, already one of the most prestigious manufacturers of solar PV material seems to believe as well in solar electric thermal technology, which has been finally seeing fast growth rates around the world in the last months. According to Mr Udo Ungeheuer, Chairman of Schott, the market for solar will double in the next five years.
The new Schott plant, which is scheduled to start production in 2009, will produce both receivers for its concentrated solar thermal power plants (initially) and 64 megawatts of solar PV modules (at a later stage).
The cost of the plant, which will be located near Alburquerque, will be around $100 m in the first phases, although the company expects to invest approximately $500 m in the longer term.
