Flexibility Over Planning |

Stereotypes are part of the global background noise, including those relating to Spain: too much improvisation and too much spontaneity. But that is precisely what is needed now in the electricity system: flexibility.
The fact is that electricity systems around the world, which are receiving more and more renewable energy, need one thing above all else: flexibility, and markets and rules that allow them to take advantage of it reliably. This poses a crisis for lovers of order, taking them out of their comfort zone: the system becomes “mobile” and blows up the old way of thinking structured around centralized schedules and rigid nominal values. The decisive factor will be whether the technical potential also offers marketable flexibility.
The advance of battery storage in Spain highlights the rapid growth of this potential: in 2025 alone, the capacity of batteries for self-consumption systems increased by around 339 MWh, representing growth of around 119% over the previous year. At the same time, more and more large storage projects are emerging, which are a key infrastructure for stabilizing the electricity system and greatly help to integrate solar and wind energy.
That is why this issue of our newsletter is dedicated to flexible generation, flexible consumption, and the framework conditions that enable this flexibility to be exploited.
