Solar PV system on a UK farm will generate 43,000kWh per year

Ecolution has installed a solar PV system at Birling Farm in Kent, UK, to subsidise the farm’s high energy consumption during the summer months.

The solar array has been installed on the roof of a grain store where it will generate over 43,000kWh of electricity per year, earning the farm over £167,000 in Feed-in Tariff payments and energy savings over the next 20 years. The system is also expected to offset over 22.5 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

The array was installed to redress the high cost of energy consumed by the grain store through its constant use of large fans and heating equipment. The Ecolution team installed a 48.45kWp solar PV system, using high-efficiency WINAICO 255w black polycrystalline modules. The modules increased wattage was needed to power the 1400 tonne floor store, maximising the power generated. Ecolution mounted the system using K2 self-weathering hanger bolts to hold the panels in place and maintain the integrity of the roof.

To protect the system from the dust generated by the heaters and fans, SMA 17000TL inverters were also installed as they are fully sealed against dust and water ingress.

“The challenge with this project was in designing and installing a system that would perform optimally, in particular during the drying process when there are a lot of airborne particles and more electricity is used” said Chris Bratherton, Group Sales Manager, Ecolution. “We are pleased to have been able to complete the project by designing a system that would work for the farm, meeting the client’s needs.”

Ecolution specialises in the design and installation of renewable energy systems, particularly with regard to the construction and commercial sectors. The company was founded in 1999 and advises clients from initial consultation through to installation, maintenance and aftercare stages.
