The biorefinery was inaugurated by the Swedish Minister of Energy and Economic Affairs Ebba Busch. Starting the production of the biorefinery is a significant milestone on the way towards more sustainable energy production.

Ms Busch inaugurated the Gothenburg biorefinery together with SCA Renewable Energy's director Mikael Källgren and St1 Nordic's CEO Henrikki Talvitie.

The value of the biorefinery's investment is approximately four billion Swedish kroner, and its completion has required more than 2.5 million working hours. After the start-up phase at the beginning of the year, the biorefinery has now started the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), renewable diesel (HVO), biodiesel and Bio-LPG.

Ms Busch explained that the biorefinery is important for both Sweden and the EU.

“Increasing domestic biofuel production is important for Sweden and the EU to achieve our high climate goals, but it is also important to increase our ability to produce our own fuels” Ms Busch said. “The need for biofuels is completely clear, not all traffic can be electrified, but all good means are needed to move our country forward towards net zero emissions. “This refinery is a step forward.”

The annual production capacity of the biorefinery is 200,000 tons of renewable fuels. The design of the biorefinery brings flexibility to the production process by enabling the use of many types of renewable raw materials, such as used cooking oil and animal fats. Pine oil is obtained as a raw material from SCA's paper and pulp mills. Throughout the project, potential raw material suppliers have been closely mapped, a global raw material supply chain has been developed and strong, long-term partnerships have been created. Brocklesby Ltd, a fatty food waste recycling company owned by St1, plays a key role in ensuring the availability of raw materials.

“The Gothenburg biorefinery is the largest single investment in St1's history, and a significant achievement on the road map of our energy transition” added Henrikki Talvitie, St1 Nordic Oy CEO. “The completion of our biorefinery highlights the extent of our ambition in promoting the energy transition. “This is an important step towards the realization of our vision, to become a leading producer and seller of CO 2 -good energy.” states .

The fuels produced in the Gothenburg biorefinery reduce road and air traffic emissions by approximately 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually compared to their fossil equivalent. All products of the biorefinery will be certified according to the sustainable development certificate ISCC (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification).
