Extremadura, with applications for 119 windparks

Last June 30 was the deadline set by Extremadura's government. A total of 17 companies presented projects for 119 windparks spread all over the region and totalling 3,500 MW. The regional Government has stated that its Royal Decree has been a "success". The finance, industry and trade Counselor, Mr Manuel Amigo, said that they received at least 119 projects, however this figure might increase since, at 2:30 pm the last 30th of June (the deadline line) there were companies that had registered the project on time, however the documentation presented had not been certified yet. Also, some projects could have been presented in other registries open for this matter.

The projects have been presented by 17 different companies, adding a total capacity of 3,641 megawatts. "Obviously, all the plans cannot go ahead, however it has been shown that there is a great potential for this energy and that those who were against us stating that linking windparks and job creation was crazy and that nobody would join, were wrong", said Mr Amigo. The wind decree calls for the creation of three jobs for each megawatt installed, in an area closer than 30 kilometers from each park.

The Department of finance, industry and trade has now six months to examine all the documentation presented and check whether it complies with the requisites (location, job creation, feasibility). Later, it will decide which are the most interesting proposals.

Among the companies that have presented projects there are the following ones: Parques Eólicos de Extremadura S.A., with 22 windparks totalling 660 MW; Instituto Energías Renovables, with 23 windparks totalling 631 MW; Unión Fenosa ENEL, with 20 windparks totalling 594 MW; Desarrollo Eólicos Extremeños, with 11 windparks and 428 MW; Vientos Extremadura, with 2 windparks and 46 MW; Refinería Balboa, with 1 park and 48 MW; Generación Eólica Extremeña, with 8 parks and 234 MW.
