Macedonia launches tender for 60 small hydro plants

The government of Macedonia has launched a bid for 60 small hydro plants. The plants will be small scale generating no more then 5 mW. The public tender was announced by Economic Ministry. The water concession will be granted for a period of 20 years in accordance with the laws on water.

These plants will be constructed on on the river basins of: Vardar, Strumica and Crni Drim.  According to the government of the Republic of Macedonia “it has a significant potential for construction of small hydro-power plants (with installed capacity of less than 5 MW in size) located at roughly 400 sites throughout the country.” The government is looking to meet over 10% of the country’s current electricity needs using small hydro.

The government of Macedonia has also put a great measure of emphasis on the issue looking for renewable energy resources for power.  The country is already pursuing an active policy of climate change protection.  In order that the projects succeed a feed-in tariff system for electricity generation by small hydro power plants will be implemented so that further development of the sector will be stimulated.
