Sustainable energy focus for policy makers from Latin America and Caribbean

Policy makers from more than 20 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are participating this week in a regional training event on sustainable energy. The event, which is taking place in Mexico City, is jointly organised by the International Energy Agency (IEA) as the lead trainer, the Mexican Department of Energy (SENER) as host, and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) as the lead sponsor.

The Sustainable Energy Training Seminar, attended by more than 50 government and industry representatives, is focusing on low-carbon energy policies and technologies, including energy efficiency and renewables. It brings together the latest analysis, approaches and best practices from around the world, such as energy portfolio modelling and technology-specific deployment roadmaps.

“Latin America and the Caribbean region is a major centre of world economic growth and will play an increasingly important role in the global energy landscape in the years ahead,” said IEA Deputy Executive Director, Ambassador Richard H. Jones. “Both energy supply and demand in the region continue to rise at an impressive rate, making the challenge of ensuring sustainable growth more important than ever. This training seminar provides an invaluable opportunity for government officials to deliberate with their peers from other countries in the region the energy policies that will best serve their national interests in an era of rapid change.”

The training event will feature two parallel courses: Energy Efficiency Policy and Measures; and Energy Technology Planning and Analysis. Both courses will consist of a mixture of lectures and practical exercises on priority-setting and policy formulation, as well as site visits to innovative, energy efficient buildings.

Participants will become familiar with a range of recognised methodologies and tools for analysis and policy formulation at the national level for the medium to long term. A number of topical publications will be launched at the regional level. The IEA will present its flagship publication Energy Technology Perspectives 2012 with global analysis and projections for the future energy technology mix to 2050. In addition, the Latin American version of the Energy Efficiency Governance Handbook will be launched, produced by the IEA with support from IDB and other institutions. The handbook, available in English, Spanish and Portuguese, offers advice to governments and other stakeholders on establishing effective governance structures for their countries. A third important launch will be that of IDB’s new monthly series of energy efficiency booklets (in English and Spanish), aiming to disseminate knowledge across the region on Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) as well as energy efficiency financing, standards and labelling.

Leading experts from the IEA and other institutions, including Organización Latinoamericana de Energía (OLADE), the IDB and the German international co-operation agency (GIZ), will present recent energy policy trends and developments from the region and around the world.

This event forms part of the IEA’s global Energy Training and Capacity Building programme, which is an integral part of the Agency’s efforts to share knowledge and provide all stakeholders with a truly global view of the world’s energy system.
