Record performance by plastic solar cells

Cheap, flexible and efficient. Are plastic solar cells the next big thing in the PV industry? A new process recently published in Science might lead the market in that direction in the future.

The new process utilizes a new way of printing plastic solar cells, being able to achieve a performance of 6.5%, a new record for plastic technology. With the new technology, multiple polymer layers are stacked within a single photovoltaic device to produce a "tandem" cell able to achieve such record performance. However, the researchers who gave birth to the new method believe that higher efficiencies are possible, even in the short term.

The team that developed the process was led by Mr Alan Heeger, a Nobel Prize, in the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB).
