Relatio announces construction of the “largest photovoltaic solar plant in the world"

The project, called Tauberlandpark, will cover 400 hectares and the first phase of construction will be completed within six months. According to Relatio, the plant, comprising three closely positioned arrays, will even be visible from space. The company states that Tauberlandpark “requires a major investment, which has been made possible thanks to the German company’s performance”.

Relatio has announced that “after a year of intense negotiations”, it has finally obtained permission to start work on the first phase of this ambitious project, which will be constructed in the German region of Tauberland. The company estimates that “the plant could be constructed within six months, enabling the company to apply for an entry in the Guinness Book of Records”. The installation will be constructed in three stages: 36 MWp in Ernsthof; 24 MWp in Gickelfeld and 10 MWp in Richelbach, and will cover a total area of 400 hectares. “Negotiations are being finalised” for the latter two phases.

According to the General Manager of Relatio Solar in Spain, Xavier Cugat, “the Tauberlandpark solar array will generate a total of 70 GWh of clean energy per year; enough to supply 17,500 homes and avoid the emission of 56,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide and 480 kilogrammes of radioactive waste each year”. Furthermore, to ensure the photovoltaic plant is as ecological as possible, Relatio reveals that “permission will be given to use the land for deer pastures”. Its performance is estimated to be very acceptable, around 1,000 kWh per installed kWp per annum, since the area receives high levels of solar radiation.

It is planned that a total of 326,000 (220 W) photovoltaic modules will be installed at Tauberlandpark, requiring 800 tonnes of steel support structures. Relatio emphasises the magnitude of this project explaining that “three trucks will be required just to deliver the screws”. According to the company, one of the objectives of the Tauberland region is to become a “Zero Emission” area. Relatio explains that “the first step to achieving this aim was made with the Heegwald photovoltaic array – also constructed by Relatio – while the last step will be taken with the new Tauberlandpark project”.
