With a storage capacity of 1,880MWh, Heysham Energy Storage is a significant addition to Innova’s growing portfolio of UK renewable energy generation and storages sites.

“As our second transmission consented ESS project in two months, achieving planning permission for Heysham Energy Storage represents another great stride forward in Innova’s mission to deliver vital energy storage in strategic locations, whilst positively improving the environment” said Lizzie Tearle, Senior Project Manager at Innova. “On behalf of Innova, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank officers of Lancaster City Council, the landowners, their representatives, and our planning consultants at Wardell Armstrong for their engagement with the team throughout the planning process.”

Councillor Sandra Thornberry, Chair of Lancaster City Council’s Planning Regulatory Committee added that the decision to grant planning permission for the project was made in a positive and proactive way in order to encourage the delivery of sustainable development that will enhance the economic, social and environmental landscape of the area.

Once energised, the 940 MW ESS site will store enough energy to power approximately2,207,000 homes for a two-hour period. The site will include around 22 acres of landscaping and planting, delivering significant biodiversity net gain on site.

The project will not only contribute significantly to the UK’s Net Zero strategy and energy availability to the National Grid, but it will also deliver a tangible and positive impact on the local environment.

As part of Innova’s Community Promise, a local community benefit fund will be set up, totalling £47,000 a year for the project’s 50-year lifetime. An additional £18,800 will also be donated to charitable causes every year for the lifetime of the project.
