Guascor announces construction of world’s largest wind farm

Guascor Group’s Chairman, José Grajales, has announced that his group will construct what will be the world’s largest wind farm in the province of Santa Cruz in Argentina. The wind farm will be located in Pico Truncado and will have an installed capacity of between 600 and 900 MW. $2,400 million (€1,700 million) will be required to develop the wind farm.

Grajales and the Argentine President, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, signed an agreement to build the wind farm in an official act held in Río Gallegos, capital of the province of Santa Cruz in South Patagonia, at the beginning of June.

According to estimates, construction will start within two months and will be completed over three years. It is calculated that the project, in which the local company Eólica-Pico Truncado S.A. holds a share, will directly and indirectly create 2 thousand jobs.

In a statement made to the Argentine news agency, Télam, Guascor’s Chairman said: “this project will represent 5% of Argentina’s energy mix in terms of capacity”.

Guascor will put up 30% of the capital required to complete the project and expects to procure the remaining financing from Argentine and international investors.

As an ancient Dutch proverb says: “It’s impossible to stop the wind, but one can build windmills”.
