Pakistan looks to meet increasing power needs with hydro power projects

The Water and Power Development Authority of Pakistan has looked at 324 sites to generate over 480 MW of hydro power. It is hoped that this increase power generation will meet ever increasing needs in the country. Despite the current political climate the country is following an aggressive energy development program. Looking at its neighbors it only makes sense to follow suit and be amongst the growing number of countries in the region who will use hydro power in the future. An offer is already on the table from the Asian Development Bank who may offer up to 80% of the financing for the hydro power project. It is hoped that many different contractors will join the project.

The proposed location is at the Upper Chenab Canal and will be looking to get on steam within the next 5 years. In total Pakistan may have 5,900 MW of hydro power to offer. This is critical for a nation which currently imports expensive oil to meet the 8 to 10 percent growth in energy demand per year. This has meant that regions which were sparsely populated were left without power and those with found themselves unable to foot the ever increasing bill.
