The project is being supported by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the newspaper said.

In unveiling the project, Sat Samy, secretary of state at the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy, said his office is supporting three pilot projects under the initiative in factories in Battambang and Kampong Chnnang.

“We are focusing on capacity-building, promotion of agricultural-residue biomass, contribution and development,” he said.

As part of the project, workers at the facilities, which include two rice-milling and one rubber-processing factory, will receive training in working with biomass technology.

According to a report released at the 2010 Pacific Energy Summit in Tokyo, Cambodia currently generates almost all of its energy from imported oil and diesel, and only 35 per cent of its population have access to reliable electricity.
