Electric vehicle charging solutions go global

Back in October, Renewable Energy Magazine reported on the unveiling of Singapore’s first solar-powered electric vehicle charging station. The charging station was developed by local clean technology company, Zeco Systems, which has now launched its electric vehicle charging solutions onto the global market.

The shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) is a major trend in transportation, driven by an increased focus on climate change, pollution, and peak oil, which Zeco hopes to exploit. Marketed under the trademark, Greenlots®, the solutions offer a platform for utilities, municipalities, car park operators, EV manufacturers and distributors to install, own and operate their own local charging network.

“The beauty of EVs is that the infrastructure is already in place,” said Oliver Risse, Managing Director of Greenlots. “We have designed Greenlots to be affordable, easy to install and convenient to use. This makes it simple for our global distribution partners to own and operate their own local networks, and for EVs to proliferate.”

Major international cities such as London, New York and Tokyo are gearing up with plans to install thousands of EV charging stations. In early 2009, Greenlots introduced Singapore’s first commercial EVs and has already begun installation of EV charging points at various locations throughout Singapore. With its first distribution partners in Europe and Asia Pacific, Greenlots is aggressively seeking distribution partners in EV “hot spot” cities.

Greenlots solutions are based on usage patterns of EV drivers and tap into the existing grid infrastructure of the city and consist of Greenlots Point, Greenlots Solar and Greenlots Sky.

Greenlots Point is an on-grid charging infrastructure that allows authorised users to access charging points with a membership card). Each Greenlots Point device meets all major safety standards, is IEC 61851 compliant, allows for controlled access to the power grid, has a built-in energy meter and data log, and communicates real-time with the Greenlots server. Greenlots Point can be used by any EV that be charged at household power outlets.

Meanwhile, Greenlots Solar are modular solar charging stations for EVs that can be easily deployed anywhere for zero emission transportation. The stations provide a high impact showcase for sustainable transport and also offer attractive advertising space. Fully customisable, the freestanding structure is compact for easy transportation and set-up.

Greenlots Sky is the web-based software that allows network operators to monitor and control all charging devices including metering, billing, security, and reporting.

Combined, Greenlots solutions allow network operators to utilise existing electricity and parking infrastructure with limited additional cost to operate a commercial network of charging points. The modular design allows network operators to scale-up their networks according to the deployment of EVs in a city. Greenlots networks are managed and monitored via a web-based platform.

“We provide the tools and services to make the lives of our partners and network operators easier,” said Risse.

Greenlots currently has partners in Austria, China, Germany, and Hong Kong, and is in discussion with other potential partners in cities in Australia, Benelux, California, Canada, France, Iceland, India, Japan, New York, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Taiwan and United Kingdom.

“With our partners, our target for 2010 is to install Greenlots networks in more than 10 countries,” said Risse.
