British renewable energy companies urged to join UK-backed trade mission

The UK government, along with the Mongolia British Chamber of Commerce, is organising a renewable energy and sustainable mining trade mission from 2-9 June 2013.

The mission coincides with the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator hosting the United Nations’ World Environment Day on 5 June.

“British companies lead the world in many areas of renewable energy and there are huge business opportunities in Mongolia,” said John Grogan, one of the trade mission’s organisers.

Grogan, who is also chairman of the Mongolian British Chamber of Commerce, added: “The trade mission will give companies working in these fields the opportunity to showcase their technology and knowledge to an eager marketplace.

“Sgurr (correct) Energy, which is a Glasgow-based company, is already working on a wind farm at Salkhit in Mongolia and there are plenty of opportunities for other companies involved with renewables to do business out there as well.”

The itinerary for the trip includes meeting with senior Mongolian government officials, including Environment Minister Sanjaasuren Oyun, as well as sector-specific meetings with businesses and educational institutes.

In recent years the Mongolian government has made efforts to prioritise renewable energy and tackle the effects of climate change on water resources, desertification and floods.

The country’s first wind energy plant is about to open and many traditional yurts now rely on solar power.

The UK government said: “An extremely varied landscape has blessed Mongolia with a valuable stock of solar and wind power sourced from the second largest desert in the world – the Gobi Desert.”

And United Nations Environment Programme executive director Achim Steiner said: “I am sure that as the global host of World Environment Day Mongolia will demonstrate to the world that a transition to a green economy is possible, even within some of the most traditionally challenging industrials sectors, when leadership, vision, smart policies and political will are translated into action on the ground.”
