The wind farm will consist of five wind turbines, each with a capacity of 2.35 MW and a total installed capacity of 12 MW. The turbines will be manufactured by Enercon and installed at the site. The wind farm is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2015 and will generate enough renewable power to supply an equivalent of 6,000 households every year.
“The development of onshore wind energy is key to our strategy” said Hans Bünting, CEO at RWE Innogy. “With the Sandbostel wind farm we are opening our fifth wind farm construction site this year. The sites are located in three European countries and will have a total capacity of more than 200 MW. Other projects are due to follow.”
RWE is also currently building the second phase of the 29 MW Königshovener Höhe wind farm in cooperation with the city of Bedburg, as well as beginning the construction of two wind farms in Poland with a total capacity of 73 MW. In The Netherlands, the company is erecting the 90 MW Zuidwester wind farm with 12 turbines of the 7.5 MW class near the Dutch Ijsselmeer.
The Sandbostel project supports the development goals of the state government of Lower Saxony which is planning to have 20 GW of onshore wind energy installed by 2050.
