Faroe Islands to become home to first wave power project in Nordic region

SEV which is the power supplier to the Faroe Islands will start using wave technology by 2010 to provide power to consumers following on the heels of Scotland as an early adopter. Potential plants would be built into the rock faces and therefore well hidden and silent.

Currently the Faroe Islands have one of the highest C02 emissions footprints per capita in the world. This is due to their remote location forcing the import of expensive fuel. The climate which is also unfavorable also forces a great deal of energy to be used for heating.

SEV currently produces 38% of its electricity from small scale hydro power plants with a further 3% coming from wind turbines. The small scale hydro projects have been built by tunneling into the rock to tap water. This will be a good competency when it comes time to implement the wave power projects. It is also worth mentioning that Norway is also on the list of countries considered as a good site for wave power projects.
