New Zealand gives go ahead to Contact Energy for its Hawea Dam Project

The project which will include 17 MW of power and will use a dam to generate hydro electric power has been given the green light after redesigns aimed at accommodating objections from the local community. The project which will be built in the Oteago Region of New Zealand will be capable of powering 6,000 homes. Originally the application for the project was already filed back in 2004. Construction of the dam could start in 2008 and is expected to take about 2 years. Recreational usage as well as environmental issues such as trout spawning have been taken into consideration.

Contact Energy supplies power to about half a million customers in New Zealand and has 10 power stations throughout the country. The company provides about 25% of the countries energy needs. The companies portfolio at the moment includes two hydro power stations. Alongside these there are three geothermal power plants and some thermal stations.
