Most Micro-generation systems produce more power than can be used directly in the household with the result that the surplus is exported to the electricity distribution network. During the summer months PV installations in households which are unoccupied during the day could be exporting 80% or more of the energy generated. Apollo claims that its GEM system automatically uses any surplus energy available to produce hot water instead of exporting it. This results in the use of less imported power for water heating and significant energy cost savings.
“The Apollo GEM Generated Energy Management system represents a significant innovation for owners of PV systems and other micro-generation technologies” said Bob Morris, Apollo Solar Electric MD. “Previously the homeowner would have exported much of the locally generated power, only to buy in power later for water heating. GEM ensures that almost all of the generated power is used in the home, reducing imported power”
The company is promoting GEM as a cost effective energy saving solution with a typical payback of between two and three years. According to Apollo the system is simple to retro-fit to existing PV installations or to install with new PV systems.
With further energy price increases announced in the UK this week of over 10%, installing such systems makes a lot of sense for PV owners, helping to insure against further inevitable fuel cost increases. Apollo’s new product is intended to capitalise on the opportunities available by assisting PV owners to make their systems as efficient as possible.
