Holland & Barrett to install 100 percent biomass in all its UK stores

The parent company of health food chain Holland & Barrett, Nuneaton-based NBTY Europe, has announced it is to install 100 percent biomass energy throughout all its 700 UK stores. The project is part of the company’s ‘Plan It Green’ initiative and will use Haven Power to supply biomass-generated electricity.

Holland & Barrett has committed itself to high environmental standards over recent years and this has included the banning of single-use plastic bags, adopting an ethical policy when sourcing raw materials and removing chemicals such as parabens and sodium lauryl sulphate from toiletry products and body care ranges.

“As the UK's leading health food and natural remedy retailer, we have always been committed to green issues, in many cases making changes to the way we do business long before other high street retailers who have followed our lead” commented Roger Craddock, Legal Director at NBTY Europe. “Our ‘Plan It Green’ programme means we are constantly looking for ways to lower our carbon footprint and ensure our energy-saving and recycling schemes span the whole business, extending to every single store we operate. This decision to adopt 100% sustainable power was an easy one because Haven’s dedication to renewable energy mirrors both our own - and our customers’ - values on protecting the environment.”

Richard Robey, Sales and Marketing Director at Haven Power, added that the majority of businesses are now under increasing pressure to be more environmentally responsible and large companies such as Holland & Barret are setting their own goals to contribute towards sustainability targets.

“Using a biomass system is an effective way of demonstrating commitment to being more sustainable” Mr Robey said.
