Yingli Green Energy has announced that it has delivered 5MW of monocrystalline silicon modules to Kingspan Energy for a new rooftop array in the UK.

The array, consisting of PANDA series modules, has been installed on the roof of a multinational automotive company located in the Midlands. It has a coverage of around 35,000 square metres, making it the largest rooftop solar project in the country. It will generate around 5.5MWh of electricity per year, enough to power 1,500 homes.

Yingli did not reveal the exact location of the array, however other green media sources have suggested that it may be the system unveiled by Jaguar Land Rover in early April at its plant in Staffordshire. The car giant announced the installation of 21,000 modules on the roof of its engine manufacturing plant with an intention to expand the array to 6.3MW by the end of the year.

Other PANDA modules have been used by Kingspan on large-scale rooftop projects elsewhere, bringing the total modules delivered by Yingli to the company to 10MW.

“The UK has seen unprecedented growth in this last quarter with hundreds of megawatts of PV being deployed ahead of the Q2 ROC adjustment” said Mr. Ramin Dilmaghanian, Business Development Director UK, Yingli Green Energy. “We believe that demand for large-scale rooftop projects with a self-consumption model will, in the coming months, continue to provide a stable backbone for the UK market.”

Mr. Liansheng Miao, Yingli’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, added that the company will continue to solidify its position in the UK market following significant growth in the country’s solar sector due to stable funding mechanisms such as the Feed-in Tariff and Renewables Obligation.

Kingspan Energy is part of the Kingspan Group which specialises in high performance insulation and building envelope solutions.
