Chinese EVs beat rivals on lease price in almost two-thirds of cases finds Hippo Leasing analysis

New analysis from Hippo Leasing suggests that one of the biggest hesitations UK buyers have about Chinese electric vehicles — whether parts, servicing and support will still be there in five years — is worth revisiting, as the manufacturers behind the badges turn out to be far from unproven.

A Study of 12 popular Chinese electric models finds a cleaner DVSA recall record than Western and East Asian rivals, but none currently qualify for the UK's Electric Car Grant

Hippo Leasing compared 12 of the UK's most popular Chinese EVs against their closest Western or East Asian rival across purchase price, monthly lease cost, range, charging speed, safety and reliability. The findings challenge several common assumptions about buying or leasing a Chinese EV.

Geely, parent company of the new Geely EX5, was founded in 1986 and already owns Volvo, Polestar and Lotus. Chery, parent company of Omoda and Jaecoo, passed 20 million cumulative global vehicle sales in July 2026 and operates in more than 130 countries. Leapmotor took a 1.5 billion euro investment from Stellantis — the group behind Vauxhall, Peugeot and Citroën — in 2023 for an approximately 20 percent stake, and now sells through a Stellantis-led joint venture outside Greater China. BYD has been manufacturing batteries since 1995.

Across the 12 pairings, the Chinese models generated two DVSA safety recalls between them, against 26 for their Western and East Asian rivals, with ten of the 12 holding a completely clean record. Newer models have had less time on UK roads to accumulate a recall history, and a recall itself shows a manufacturer has identified and fixed an issue rather than the reverse — so this should not be read as one country building inherently safer cars than another.

None of the 12 Chinese EVs currently qualify for the £3,750 Electric Car Grant, purely on production-location rules rather than any technical or quality issue. This affects total cost of ownership calculations regardless of a model's individual merits.

Chinese models still win on lease price in 7 of 11 comparable pairings (64 percent), according to Hippo Leasing's own lease data, narrowing or reversing the gap left by the missing grant once financing is factored in.

The BYD Seal recorded the longest range in the study at 354 miles, while the Xpeng G6 set the benchmark for charging speed with 382kW DC ultra-fast charging.

Hippo Leasing ranked all 12 pairings across price, lease cost, range, charging speed, safety and recall history. Chinese models came out ahead in 6 of the 12 pairings, tied in 2, and trailed in 4.

The full model-by-model breakdown, covering price, lease cost, range, charging speed, safety ratings and manufacturer background for all 12 pairings, is available here.

“Chinese EVs tend to get discussed in extremes, either as unbeatable bargains or risky imports, although the reality is far more complex” said Tom Preston, Chief Executive Officer at Hippo Leasing. “Most of the Chinese models we evaluated offer solid build quality, competitive tech and strong crash safety ratings. When you look at official DVSA recall data, Chinese models actually hold a cleaner track record so far, with just two recalls across all 12 models. Combine that with our own website rates showing that Chinese EVs win on lease price in 64 percent of cases, and the argument for leasing a Chinese EV becomes very compelling. For those looking to lease a Chinese EV, drivers should evaluate vehicles on a model-by-model basis rather than treating the badge as a blanket guarantee or red flag. Compare real post-grant prices, check active safety ratings, and run live insurance quotes before signing a lease to make sure you're getting the best deal.”

Preston added that the same principle applies as much to fleet procurement as it does to individual drivers: judge the model, not the badge.

Hippo Leasing compared 12 of the most popular Chinese electric cars on sale in the UK against their nearest established Western or East Asian rival, evaluating each pairing on purchase price (post-grant, where eligible), monthly lease cost, WLTP range, DC fast-charging speed, Euro NCAP safety rating and owner reliability.

List prices were audited via manufacturer configurators; monthly lease rates were taken from Hippo Leasing's website database in August 2026; Euro NCAP ratings were sourced from euroncap.com; vehicle recall counts were extracted from the DVSA's official check-vehicle-recalls database; and reliability rankings were sourced from What Car?. SMMT registration data was compiled in August 2026 via industry reporting.

Data collection took place in August 2026.
