EV charge points have become a ‘must have’ for UK homebuyers says Andersen EV

A nationwide study conducted in the UK by Andersen EV has revealed that the electric vehicle charger is quickly becoming the new ‘must-have’ feature for modern homes, with a significant proportion of prospective buyers influenced by whether a property already has a charge point installed.

More than half (53 percent) of car owners in the UK surveyed by the study said that, if they were looking to buy a home today, the presence of a pre-installed EV charger would positively influence their decision to purchase. This includes those who said it would have a ‘strong’ (13 percent) or ‘very strong’ (16 percent) influence on their choice or would even be ‘a deciding factor’ (6 percent), highlighting how the shift to electrified mobility is now shaping expectations of the ‘ideal’ home.

The influence of a pre-installed charge point when buying a home varies significantly by age. 82 percent of those aged 18 to 24 say an existing charger would positively influence their decision, compared with 33 percent of those aged 65 and over.

The research also suggests that car owners want their charge point to be more than a functional device. Exactly half (50 percent) agree with the statement: “It is important to me that a charge point would look good on the outside of my home.”

Most EV chargers on the market currently have been designed with function over form, often resulting in bulky, industrial plastic boxes that detract from a property’s aesthetic and are more eyesore than asset.

Once again, younger car owners feel this more strongly. 70 percent of those aged 25 to 34 say the appearance of the charger is important, compared to just 39 percent of those aged 65 and over.

“As EV adoption accelerates, the home charging point has moved from a niche add-on to an essential feature for future-proofed properties” said David Martell, CEO of Andersen EV. “Today’s home buyers increasingly expect convenience, efficiency and style, and a well-designed charge point can now play a meaningful role in a home’s appeal. Our new survey findings come at a time when new-build developers, renovators and home improvers are looking to ensure their properties are attractive and future-ready. With demand rising for homes already equipped for electric mobility, the presence and appearance of a charger is becoming an important differentiator.”
