A Brief History of Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

A Brief History of Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

The 1980s were vested in exploring the use of vanadium species in flow batteries. Sum et al. (1985a; 1985b) investigated the use of vanadium (II), (III), (IV), and (V) in half-cells of redox batteries. Skyllas-Kazacos et al. (1986) constructed a laboratory-scale cell containing V2+/V3+ and V4+/V5+ half cells in a vanadium redox battery and further investigation into the different components of the VRFBs continued in the 1990s.
