Construction begins in Vietnam on Hydro Power Plant

The 125 mW hydro power plant being built by Dak Drinh Hydro Power Plant , at a price tag of  $187 million USD.  The venture is being funded using a joint-stock company structure and will see Vietnam Oil and Gas, the Vietnam Bank of Investment and Development, and Song Da Construction Corporation share the costs of the project.

The plant is part of a wider initiative to provide the central regions of the country with power.  The power plant will first become operational in 2011 it is estimated.  Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia agreed awhile ago that their border provinces would become home to more hydropower. It was estimated that seven provinces spread across these three countries would have a potential of  25bn kWh a year, more then enough to keep up with exploding demands for electricity.

Currently in Vietnam there are about 4,000 mW of hydro power capacity operating or under construction. This however is still only a fraction of the total economically viable power resources which hydro offers to this country.  The countries goals for hydro power generation are equally ambitious looking to reach a total of 8,000 mW of installed capacity by 2010.  Compared to Laos which only has approximately 400 mW of installed capacity Vietnam is a leader in the region.  Demand for electricity in the region , especially in the strong export driven manufacturing economy of Vietnam is set to raise dramatically as more jobs and manufacturing shift from China to the region.  Another factor is a lot of first time consumers are being reached by the power companies now, and more people opening up accounts with power utility companies.
