Half cell and third cell modules reduce solar power costs

Innotech Solar (ITS) has presented cost-effective solar modules with half and third cells at Intersolar 2010. According to the group, the ‘ITS Economy half cell’ and ‘ITS Economy third cell’ modules are particularly suitable for large roof and ground-mounted systems and have been certified by TÜV Rheinland according to IEC standards.

The new product line has the same dimensions and electrical features as standard Innotech Solar modules, and multi-stage testing and optimisation processes guarantee a high performance level comparable to that of conventional modules. ITS offers the same performance and product warranties as the market standards.

“With this new product line we continue our strategy of increasing the efficiency of the solar value chain. The new products are on par with standard modules, but are sold for even lower prices,” explains Innotech Solar’s Chief Sales Officer, Robert Händel.

In order to produce the new modules, ITS has added additional production steps to their existing optimisation process for crystalline solar cells. Impurities and other flaws that could lead to decreased output are identified. A laser then isolates the impurities. Up to now, cells that could not be optimized in this way were sorted out. However the new production steps have made it possible to isolate even larger impure zones: a laser cuts off the non-functional parts of the cell so that only the fully-functioning remaining halves or thirds are further processed. Cells that up until recently would have been rejected can now be used for the production of high-quality modules, making cell and module production even more efficient and environmentally-friendly.

The ‘ITS Economy half cell’ and ‘ITS Economy third cell’ modules are available as 200, 210, 220 and 230 Wp modules. Due to a positive sorting, the customers gain additional power output: a 220 Wp module has an actual power of 220-230 Wp, for instance.

Both module types were on display at the Innotech Solar stand at the Intersolar exhibition in Munich last week.

The Innotech Solar Group is a solar technology company and international provider of PV modules. The company specialises in the analysis and optimisation of solar cells and employs industrial processes developed by their own research teams. Production is based in Norway and subsidiaries are located in Germany, China, and Switzerland
