SunEdison plan to build 100MW solar PV plant in Chile

SunEdison has joined with iron ore group CAP in a project to build what may become the largest solar PV plant in South America and perhaps one of the largest solar plants in the world. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2013 and is designed to have an installed capacity of 100MW. It will be located in Chile’s Atacama Desert and will produce an estimated 15% of CAP’s energy demand.

“We are very pleased to add the CAP group to our customer portfolio” said Pancho Pérez, SunEdison General Manager for EMEA, Latin America and North Asia. “We have worked to deliver an innovative solution to CAP designed to reduce their energy costs while deriving up to 15 percent of their electricity supply from clean energy."

CAP group President, Jaime Charles, added that the agreement reaffirms the groups commitment to sustainable development in Chile conforming to the energy goals set by the Chilean government and using state-of-the-art technology. Mr Charles confirmed that it was SunEdison’s track record and long-term commitment to projects which helped to secure its selection as CAP’s partner on this project.

The plant will consist of over 300,000 Silvantis™ monocrystalline silicon modules made of non-toxic, non-polluting materials that can be recycled at the end of their useful life. Solar trackers designed by SunEdison will also be installed incorporating steel supplied by CAP. The SunEdison Renewable Operations Centre (ROC) will manage the project once complete.

SunEdison has been ranked as one of the leading solar power providers in 2012 with over 850MW of solar capacity installed around the world. The company has been operating in South America since 2010 and has offices in Chile, Brazil and Mexico. The new plant is expected to generate 270GWh of clean energy during its first year of operation thereby preventing 135,000 tonnes of carbon per year from entering the atmosphere, the equivalent of withdrawing over 30,000 automobiles from the roads.
