Danish wind companies blow hot and cold in Spain

While LM Glasfiber, the leading wind turbine blade manufacturer in the world, is considering a return to As Pontes (Galicia) – where it closed its blade factory eight months ago – to establish its new logistics centre in Southern Europe, Vestas is planning temporary lay-off proceedings for around 160 of around 360 workers at its nacelle plant in Leon.

While the local Galician press report that the Danish manufacturer LM Glasfiber is planning to open the new logistics subsidiary of LM, LM Wind Power Service & Logistics, in As Pontes as soon as October, employing a hundred workers, the company itself warns it is still "investigating the possibility of transforming its old As Pontes blade factory into a logistics centre". LM Glasfiver adds that the location is" very interesting", but insists that nothing has been decided yet.

"Overall, we believe that Spain has a high potential market for our services and businesses," says the logistics department in Spain. The large amount of installed capacity in our country, which exceeds 19.8 GW, "provides enormous potential for professional maintenance and repair by experts from LM Wind Power Service & Logistics", highlight LM.

Meanwhile, various media reports indicate that Vestas plans to temporarily reduce its workforce in the province of Leon from 360 employees at present to about 160.

The company is currently negotiating temporary lay-off proceedings with the trade unions. Vestas has refused to provide more information and some employees have complained about the lack of information. The temporary lay-off is attributed to the lack of new orders due to the slowdown caused by Royal Decree Law 6/2009, which has paralysed the sector by reducing the annual workload to less than 800 MW, compared to 2.4 GW of newly installed capacity in 2009.
