New York’s first Community Choice Aggregation initiative launched by cleantech firms

Westchester Power will use ProjectEconomics software platform to provide 120,000 people across 20 municipalities around Westchester with affordably sourced electricity, starting on May 1st. More municipalities will have the opportunity to take advantage of the programme in the future and as it expands and awareness improves, Sustainable Westchester will also be offer their customers additional clean energy programmes.

Westchester Power is an innovative community-based bulk energy purchasing programme which is aiming to lower costs and increase access to renewable energy. All eligible consumers within the 20 participating municipalities will be automatically entered into the programme, creating significant purchasing power across the county. These customers will have the choice of opting for 100 percent renewable energy or New York’s standard electricity mix. However, both rates will be lower than current rates, saving all participants money each month. ProjectEconomics will play a crucial role in managing the programme.

“Westchester Power’s Community Choice Aggregation program will provide thousands of customers with renewable energy supply, and create a fantastic opportunity to engage customers in ways utilities have been unable to do” said President and CEO Eric Dahnke. “We see Community Choice Aggregation as a path to allow New Yorkers a way to participate in other clean energy programs like community solar and energy efficiency.”

ProjectEconomics Inc. is a provider of community solar and clean energy programme solutions which works with major utilities, solar developers and community groups to provide a software platform that improves the delivery of clean energy programmes. The start-up operates out of New York University (NYU) Tandon’s ACRE incubator and has been active in developing New York’s community distributed generation landscape.

Sustainable Westchester is a membership organisation with more than 85 percent of all Westchester municipalities participating, representing 800,000 county residents. The group’s aim is to turn environmental challenges into opportunities to improve quality of life, the economy and the future prospects of county citizens.

NYC ACRE is part of NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering and is a business incubator for cleantech, smart-grid technology and sustainable smart cities. It supports early-stage business ventures with innovative technologies and new business models for a greener, smarter and more connected world.
