Viridor launches Peterborough renewable energy project fund

Opened in early 2016, Viridor operates the state-of-the-art Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) in Fengate, in partnership with Peterborough City Council. The facility transforms 85,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste into enough renewable energy for around 16,000 homes. Associated with the partnership is a pot of community funding to give an added boost to community projects in the area. Viridor is now welcoming applications to share part of the funding pot spread across the next 30 years of the partnership.

The Fund comprises of an annual contribution of £20,000 from Viridor with an additional ‘top-up’ to the fund of one pound for every non-PCC tonne of waste brought to the ERF. Any community led organisation in the Peterborough administrative area will be eligible to apply for funding and there is an easy-to-use application guide online.

“We have developed a really productive partnership with Peterborough City Council to help them divert their non-recyclable waste away from landfill and to generate enough energy for around 15 percent of the City” said Paul Rowland, Regional Manager for Viridor. “At the start of 2016 we opened the state-of-the-art Peterborough Energy Recovery Facility and with this investment comes a commitment to support the communities in which we work, I encourage any local community projects to investigate whether they will be eligible for support from the fund.”

Councillor Gavin Elsey Cabinet member for Digital, Waste and Streetscene for Peterborough City Council added that rather than sending non-recyclable waste to landfill, it will be turned into electricity at the Peterborough Energy Recovery Facility, saving the city £1 million every year for the next three decades. The community benefit fund associated with the ERF is aimed at giving a financial injection into projects in Peterborough working to develop lasting schemes for the City.
