The decision comes shortly after the SNP's annual conference in Aberdeen, where energy security and the importance of home-grown energy featured prominently in policy discussions, highlighting the role that renewable energy projects can play in strengthening Scotland's energy system.
“At a time when strengthening Scotland’s energy security and unlocking investment in home-grown renewable energy is more important than ever, we’re delighted that councillors have recognised what Bonnyknox Solar Farm can offer Angus and have given the project the green light” said Claire Chamberlain, Senior Development Project Manager at RES. “We’ve listened carefully to local feedback throughout the project’s development, and we look forward to working with residents and businesses to deliver meaningful benefits for the area.”
The consented 49.9 MW solar farm will deliver local benefits, including construction investment, opportunities for local businesses and contractors, and a tailored community benefit package shaped by local priorities. This could include RES' innovative Local Electricity Discount Scheme, which provides annual electricity bill discounts for eligible nearby properties.
Alongside these economic and community benefits, Bonnyknox has been designed to support nature recovery, while adding clean, low-cost generation to Scotland’s energy mix. Research1 shows that well-managed solar farms can support a wide range of wildlife, including 27 butterfly species and numerous red-listed birds. The project’s landscaping and habitat measures are intended to create valuable habitat and foraging opportunities for birds, mammals, pollinators and other insects.
The development has also been designed as a dual-purpose project, enabling agricultural use to continue through sheep farming, alongside renewable energy generation. Other measures associated with the project include upgrades to the local private water supply and highway improvements, delivering wider benefits beyond the site.
Construction of the solar farm is expected to take around 12 months. RES will continue to keep stakeholders and the local community informed as plans progress.
