As home batteries move from simple wall hardware to fully connected, intelligent energy assets, the partnership will focus on bringing cutting-edge battery innovations directly to everyday households.
The partnership brings together two industry heavyweights: CATL and Ampace’s experience in battery chemistry and manufacturing, alongside Octopus Energy’s software platform, smart tariffs, and Virtual Power Plant flexibility capabilities.
The collaboration will draw on CATL and Ampace's pioneering research into next-generation battery chemistries – including breakthrough developments in sodium-ion technology, high-density cell designs, and ultra-long lifecycle systems – to build safer, greener, and far more affordable home batteries.
Paired with Octopus’s smart tech ecosystem, these systems will automatically charge up when energy is cleanest and cheapest and share power back to the grid during peak times to slash household bills.
The collaboration will initially explore opportunities across European markets, where Octopus has retail energy offices.
“Combining CATL and Ampace's world-leading battery chemistry with Octopus's smart tech and customer platform will transform home energy storage” said Greg Jackson, Founder and CEO, Octopus Energy Group. “Together, we're building next-generation batteries where hardware and software work in complete harmony to slash energy bills and speed up the green energy transition.”
The MoU builds on the relationship between CATL and Octopus, who previously collaborated to roll out 'Swaptopus' battery swapping stations across Europe, demonstrating the strength of their ongoing technical and operational partnership.
The partnership improves on Octopus existing suite of offerings in low carbon technology, which currently includes the Octopus Cosy heat pump range, Octopus Charge EV charger range, and Octopus Nook home battery range. Ampace’s battery chemistry technology combined with Octopus’ software will help make existing residential home energy batteries cheaper and better.
“The future of energy is not just about generating or storing more power, but about making energy smarter, more connected, and more accessible” added Jason Zhu, President of Energy Storage Systems, Ampace. “We believe the convergence of advanced battery technologies, intelligent energy management, and innovative energy services will fundamentally reshape how energy is delivered and consumed. Through this strategic collaboration with CATL and Octopus Energy, we aim to accelerate this transformation, unlock new possibilities for the global energy ecosystem, and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable energy future.”
