Belarus to build wind farm as part of European assistance project

Vladimir Tsalko, the Belarus Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, has announced that a windpower plant will be built in the country under a joint Belarus-EU assistance project called “Green Economy in Belarus”.

The announcement followed the signing of an agreement by the Belarus Ambassador Maira Mora on behalf of the EU. The agreement enables plans to finance the project at a cost of €12 million to go ahead.

“Nearly €5 million from the funds allocated under the project will be put into the implementation of a pilot project to construct a windpower plant near Novogrudok in order to determine the efficiency of using wind energy in the country and demonstrate its potential” Mr Tsalko said. “Wind energy is a promising area of the green economy in Belarus. The signing of this agreement speaks of stability and fruitfulness of our relations with the European Union.”

Work needed for the design and implementation of the project has already been completed and a suitable site for the plant identified. Wind turbines are already operating in the country at locations such as Myadel and the wind sector has been warmly welcomed and promoted in Minsk, Vitebsk, Brest and Grodno Oblasts. The agreement also establishes an environment for the construction of some twenty further projects and the exchange of knowledge and experience between Belarus and the EU. The country has been working closely with Europe on wind energy and environmental protection since 2009 and the towns of Kobryn and Mosty in particular are cooperating closely with the EU with regard to waste reduction and processing.
