DTBird® Publishes Technical Specifications for the Offshore ALBATROSS System

DTBird has announced the publication of the technical specifications for the offshore ALBATROSS system. Engineered for offshore conditions, the DTBird ALBATROSS system comes in seven configurations - A4, A6, A8, A10, A12, T2, and T4 - enabling project-specific designs across rotor diameters, target-species profiles, and objectives (monitoring, collision control, and/or mortality mitigation) to meet marine operational requirements.

The Main Features Are:

  • Marine-grade components: engineered for harsh offshore exposure (salt/spray and temporary immersion), with UV-resistant and impact protection.

  • Detection module: Maximum distance up to 800 m with graphics of detectability at any distance and detection distance ranges with detectability >90% for species like northern gannets and kittiwakes.

  • Night detection module: VGA thermal cameras enable automatic bird detection in low-light and night conditions at sea.

  • 360º horizontal coverage and up to 90º vertical coverage with real-time detection of all bird species and sizes including the rotor swept zone.

  • Collision detectability in videos >95%.

  • Deterrence module: automated acoustic signals (250–12,500 Hz); efficacy demonstrated in independent onshore evaluations (REWI 2024, ECOCOM 2016). Configurable triggers for daytime/nighttime high bird-activity thresholds and for forecast-based high-activity periods.

  • Stop module that automatically shuts down the wind turbine based on real-time bird collision risk evaluation with 4 stop protocols, from basic to high protection. Optional configuration available for bird flight activity thresholds.

  • Data integration with wind farm SCADA/PLC systems via multiple protocols.

  • All events, videos and operational data are stored and accessible via DTBird’s NEST platform, with protected access and integrated analytics.
